211 INFORMATION AND REFERRAL HOTLINE(Top)
Calling 211 provides free information (over the phone) about housing, health and social services throughout Alameda County. Just dial 211 on your telephone and you will be connected to an operator who can assist you with your needs. This service is available in multiple languages, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

511 TRANSPORTATION HOTLINE (Top)
511 is a toll-free phone and web service that consolidates Bay Area transportation-related information into a one-stop resource. This easy three-digit number provides up-to-the-minute information on traffic conditions and incidents, details on public transportation routes/fares, instant carpool or van pool referrals, bicycling information, trip-planning, airport access, City Car Share, Trans-Link, FasTrak and more.

AAI HEALTH SERVICES (Top)
AAI Health Services provides primary health care services on a sliding scale, as well as extending service to Medi-Cal recipients and the uninsured.

AAI Health Services is located at 1002 Central Avenue in Alameda, and their phone number is (510) 521-6078.
AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM (Top)

AARP Driver Safety Program is the largest classroom driver course specifically designed for motorists who are 50 and older!

AARP offers two classroom formats, which are offered on alternating months.

  • The standard course is taught in two, four-hour sessions held over a two-day period on the 1st and 2nd Wednesday of the month from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
  • The refresher course is available to individuals that have taken the standard course within the last four years. It is offered on the 1st Wednesday ay of the month between 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.
Pre-registration for both classes is a must. There is a $12 fee per person for AARP members with their membership numbers, and a $14 fee for non-AARP members. The registration fee is only payable by check made to AARP.

You must pre-register in the Mastick Office.

AARP DRIVER SAFETY ONLINE COURSE (Top)
AARP now offers the Driver Safety Course online. The cost is $15.95 for AARP members and $19.95 for non-members. The course may be completed at your own pace within 60 days of registration.

ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES (APS) (Top)
Alameda County Social Services Agency (APS) "investigates and evaluates complaints of abuse or neglect." If you, or someone you know, are experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, please call Adult Protective Services (510) 577-1900 or (510) 577-3500.

Calls are received by a confidential voicemail system. Please leave your name, phone number and the nature of your call. An intake worker will promptly return your call.
ALAMEDA COUNTY NETWORK OF CARE (Top)
The Alameda County Network of Care is a comprehensive, Internet-based resource for seniors and people with disabilities, as well as their caregivers and service providers.

The web site offers information on social service programs, including transportation, and can be accessed online at alameda.networkofcare.org.
ALAMEDA FOOD BANK (Top)
The Alameda Food Bank is a private non-profit organization providing nutritious food at no cost to low-income residents of the City of Alameda. Clients are able to receive up to six free food packages each month, which include a healthy mix of produce, meat, breads, and non-perishable food items.

ALAMEDA FRIENDLY VISITORS (AFV) (Top)
AFV, a companion program to Alameda Meals on Wheels (AMOW), provides companionship to seniors and homebound Alameda residents.

AFV volunteers are matched with homebound neighbors to provide friendship, exchange stories, share common interests/hobbies, have a few laughs, and offer telephone reassurance, while bringing joy and satisfaction to both parties.

ALAMEDA MEALS ON WHEELS (AMOW) (Top)
AMOW delivers hot, diet specific meals to seniors and homebound Alameda residents seven days per week. Meals are sold at cost and delivered by volunteers. Sliding scale fees ensure that services are accessible to all.

ALAMEDA ONE-STOP CAREER CENTER (Top)
The Alameda One-Stop Career Center is a self-directed resource center. The Center provides resources and services that are focused on assisting any member of the community with job search, training information, and career assistance.

ALAMEDA SAFETY AND ACCESSIBILITY PROGRAM (Top)

The Alameda Fire Department’s Safety and Accessibility Program is a free service for low-income Alameda residents who are 62 years of age and older or disabled.

The program provides:

  • Installation of Smoke Detectors
  • Installation of Carbon Monoxide Detectors
  • Installation of Night Lights
  • Installation of Other Fire and Fall Prevention Safety Devices

ALTA BATES SUMMIT MEDICAL CENTER(Top)
Alta Bates Summit Medical Center offers a Grief Recovery Group at Summit Merritt Pavilion, 350 Hawthorne Avenue in Oakland.

ALTA BATES TELE-CARE PROGRAM (Top)
The Alta Bates Tele-Care Program offers a daily reassurance telephone call to individuals living alone, homebound, disabled, or convalescing from an illness. This free program is a source of comfort 365 days per year.

ALZHEIMER'S SERVICES OF THE EAST BAY (ASEB) (Top)

ASEB is a non-profit organization that provides services for individuals with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, as well as support for their caregivers. It also educates and informs the general community about issues related to other related dementia care.

BATTERY DISPOSAL OF HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES(Top)
Household batteries (e.g., AAA, AA, C, D or 9-volt) can no longer be deposited in your gray solid waste (garbage) cart. Mastick Senior Center now accepts household batteries.

Deposit batteries in the Battery Recycling Cart located in the Mastick Office on Monday through Friday between 8:30 am - 4:00 pm.

Alameda County Industries (ACI) gladly accepts household batteries at their office
on 2307 Blanding Avenue, Suite B, weekdays between 7:00 am - 6:00 pm. To contract ACI, please call (510) 483-1400.
BICYCLE LICENSE SCHEDULE (Top)
The City of Alameda requires that all bicycles traveling city streets be licensed. To obtain a bicycle license, visit your neighborhood fire station (Stations 1,2, 3 or 4) with your bicycle, Monday through Friday, between 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm, or Saturday between 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

The fee is $5 per bicycle and the license is valid for three years.

Consider riding your bike to the center now that Mastick Senior Center now has two bicycle racks:

  • Rear entrance of Mastick Social Hall
BLOOD PRESSURE AND PODIATRY SCREENING (Top)

In order to obtain an accurate blood pressure reading, please refrain from exercise, caffeine and nicotine for 90 minutes prior to testing. There are two options for testing:

  • Blood Pressure Screening - Alameda Fire Department provides screening on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm in the Mastick's Media Room.

  • Podiatry and Blood Pressure Screening - Dr. Dale Wright, DPM provides his services on the 3rd Tuesday of the month between 1:45 - 3:00 pm in the Mastick's Media Room.

Appointments are required.

BROWN BAG PROGRAM (Top)
Mercy Care Center's Brown Bag Program collects and distributes donated food to 1,500 low-income seniors twice a month at 12 sites in Alameda County. Mastick is the designated site for the city of Alameda.
Eligible candidates must be 60 or older, with a gross monthly income of $1,354 for a single person and $2,192 for families of two or more. Membership must be renewed annually. An annual voluntary contribution of $10 is appreciated at registration.

Brown Bag distributions are on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month between 9:00 - 10:00 am in Mastick's Dining Room 1. Members must have transportation and be present to pick up their bag of groceries.

All applicants must provide identification and proof of income at the time of registration.

CALIFORNIA ADVOCATES FOR NURSING HOME REFORM (CANHR) (Top)
CANHR is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of care and life for nursing home as well as residential care residents in California.

CITY OF ALAMEDA PARATRANSIT SHUTTLE(Top)

The City of Alameda offers a free shuttle service for Alameda residents who are:

  • Aged 55 years and older
  • Or, certified to use East Bay Paratransit or the Alameda Premium Taxi Service
This service provides riders with a way of getting to and from popular shopping areas, medical facilities, or visiting friends within Alameda City.

The hours of operation are from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Riders must show an ID card. To obtain a shuttle ID card or for more information, visit the Mastick Office or the Paratransit Program web site at www.alamedaparatransit.com.

City of Alameda Paratransit Services are funded by Measure B.
CITY OF ALAMEDA PREMIUM TAXI SERVICE (Top)
Premium Taxi Service is available to individuals that are EBP-certified, 75 years of age or older, or 70 years of age or older without a driver’s license. The City of Alameda contracts with local taxi companies to provide this service.

The service provides a 50% discount for taxi rides with the City of Alameda's transportation provider. The service is not limited to medical trips.

Eligible riders must purchase the required discount coupons in advance.

Cost:
Each travel coupon has a $5 value and costs $2.50. If the cost of a trip cannot be covered exactly with one or more $5 coupons, you may either give the driver an additional coupon or cash to pay the additional cost. However, if you use a coupon, drivers cannot provide you with change. You must present travel coupons with the requested travel information to the taxi driver upon arrival at your requested destination.

EAST BAY PARATRANSIT SERVICES (ALAMEDA COUNTY) (Top)
East Bay Paratransit (EBP) is a public transit service for people unable to use regular AC Transit buses, or BART trains, because of a disability or disabling health condition.

EBP transports riders to and from their destination in sedans or vans equipped with a wheelchair lift.

EDEN COUNCIL FOR HOPE AND OPPORTUNITY (ECHO) (Top)
ECHO, established as a fair housing agency, has expanded to a full-service housing counseling organization providing services to very low and moderate income clients.

ECHO provides fair housing counseling, mediation, investigation, and audits. In addition, it operates landlord/tenant counseling programs, rental assistance, emergency grant programs, and home equity conversions.

ELECTRIC BILL AND UTILITY ASSISTANCE (Top)

Listed below are two organizations who assist with utility bills, HEAP and the Red Cross:

  • The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is a federally funded program that assists low-income households with energy bills. It provides direct payment to the utility company on behalf of an eligible applicant. Eligibility is based upon the household's total monthly income. EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT (EDD) (Top)
Employment Development Department (EDD) connects millions of job seekers and employers. Offices are located in Oakland at 1212 Broadway, or on the 3rd floor of 675 Hegenberger.

FEDERAL AND STATE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR OLDER AMERICANS (Top)
The National Council on the Aging has created a web site to assist those who wish to have information regarding available programs. Program information includes housing, employment, prescription drug costs, and utility bills.

The web site, www.benefitscheckup.org, lists more that 1,000 benefit programs and will walk you through the process.
FOUR BRIDGES (Top)
Four Bridges, sponsored by Bay Area Community Services (BACS), is a socialization program for adults with social and emotional problems. The program is offered Monday and Friday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at First Congregational Church, 1912 Central Avenue in Alameda.

GRIEF SUPPORT (Top)
Alameda Hospital and Odyssey Hospice offers a support group for those who have been touched by a death-related loss. The groups are non-denominational and open to the public.

The meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month from 4:00 pm to 5:15 pm at Alameda Hospital Women’s Health and Resource Center, which is located at 2070 Clinton Avenue on the 1st Floor .

HEALTH INSURANCE ASSISTANCE (HICAP) (Top)
HICAP is a volunteer supported program that helps Medicare beneficiaries of any age make informed choices and provides advocacy when their health benefits are threatened or denied.

HICAP counselors provide individual counseling to Medicare beneficiaries regarding Medicare billings and claims problems, Medicare supplemental insurance, prescription drugs, Medicare HMOs and other managed care options, long-term care insurance, appeals, and more.

HOUSING REHABILITATION PROGRAMS (Top)
The City of Alameda sponsors several rehabilitation programs providing loans, grants, and/or technical assistance to homeowners. Assistance is available to develop or conserve housing stock for low and moderate-income residents (less than $51,550 for a two-person household, or $45,100 for a one-person household), correct code deficiencies, or perform minor emergency home repairs.

The city has a new grant program exclusively for accessibility modifications that can assist by adding ramps and lifts, as well as making limited interior accessibility adaptation (e.g., installation of grab bars, etc.).

The substantial rehab program creates new affordable rental units in existing vacant or underutilized structures. Income limits do not apply to the property owner/developer in this program. For more information, please call Mariam Delagrange at (510) 747-6897.
IN HOME SUPPORT SERVICES (IHSS) (Top)
IHSS for Alameda County assists eligible aged, blind, and disabled individuals to remain safely in their own homes with independence and dignity. Home care workers assist with cooking, housecleaning and shopping. They also assist with personal care (e.g., bathing, dressing, etc.).

INCOME TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE (Top)
During February through April 15 each year, AARP Tax Assistance Program volunteers are available to provide free tax preparation services to low and middle income individuals with special attention to those 60 and older.

Appointments quickly fill. Participants are encouraged to schedule appointments in February by visiting the Mastick Office or call (510) 747-7506.

This program is sponsored by AARP, IRS and Mastick Senior Center.
LAVENDER SENIORS OF THE EAST BAY (Top)
Lavender Seniors of the East Bay provides social activities, support and networking for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender seniors in the East Bay. Their mission is to improve the quality of life for older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties through outreach, advocacy and education.

  • Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) provides legal assistance to seniors 60 and older on the third Monday of the month between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm in the Mastick Office. MEAL SERVICE - LUNCH AT MASTICK(Top)
Why cook when you can enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Bay Area Community Services (BACS) and served at Mastick Senior Center on Monday through Friday. Enjoy a nutritious meal in a friendly and welcoming environment. Volunteers gladly serve you and the staff does the dishes!

Individuals 60+ are encouraged to make a voluntary contribution $3 per meal per person. Members, guests or companions under age 60 who wish to participate are required to pay $5 per meal.

MEDI-CAL ASSISTANCE (Top)
The Medi-Cal Center is located at 8477 Enterprise Way, Oakland, CA 94621.

MEDICAL RETURN TRIP IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM (MRTIP) (Top)
MRTIP is designed to provide a more flexible method for returning home after/from medical appointments. To qualify for this program, participants must be certified eligible. The City of Alameda contracts with local taxi companies to provide this free service.

To qualify for this program, participants must be certified eligible East Bay Paratransit participants. This program is made available through City of Alameda Measure B funding. To obtain vouchers or for more information, contact the Mastick Office at (510) 747-7506.

NON-EMERGENCY WHEELCHAIR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM (Top)
Alameda County offers a non-emergency transportation service for individuals using wheelchairs who experience a wheelchair breakdown, or other kind of emergency requiring transport of the individual or a wheelchair.

RENT REVIEW ADVISORY COMMITTEE (RRAC) (Top)
The RRAC reviews complaints of significant rental increase and provides a neutral forum for renters and residential property owners to present their views. It evaluates increases, determines whether they are equitable, and if not, attempts to mediate a resolution acceptable to all parties.

ROAD TO RECOVERY (Top)
Road to Recovery is an American Cancer Society program that provides free transportation for patients to their cancer-related medical appointments. Volunteer drivers bring ambulatory patients to and from medical treatment facilities, providing a friendly, supportive, and reliable presence for patients who are unable to drive themselves.

The program requires three to five business days advance notice, and prefers appointments between 9:30 am - 2:30 pm on Monday through Friday.

SEEDS COMMUNITY RESOLUTION CENTER (SEEDS CRC) (Top)
SEEDS CRC has multilingual trained volunteers from East Bay communities representing a variety of ages, ethnic groups, religions, sexual orientation, occupations, life experiences, available to provide mediation services to assist with conflict resolution.

Senior Center Without Walls offers group activities, friendly conversation and an assortment of classes to homebound elders who find it difficult to get to a senior center. Individuals can participate from the comfort of their own home through telephone conference calls.

This activity program is free and available to seniors of Alameda County!

Senior Center Without Walls is sponsored by Senior Resources at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakland and the Episcopal Homes Foundation. The program is funded by grants and private donations.

SENIOR EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (ASSETS) (Top)
Are you 55 or older, low income and in need of employment? ASSETS Senior Employment Opportunities Program can assist with your employment needs. If you need training, their Career Resource Center is available for people 50 years of age and older.

SUTTER VNA AND HOSPICE (Top)

Sutter VNA and Hospice offers various programs that are open to the public. Contact them about their bereavement groups as indicated below:

  • For those grieving the death of a family member or friend, please call (510) 450-8596 or (510) 450-8867 for information about ongoing groups.

  • For those who have lost a spouse or partner, please all (510) 450-8596 for information about ongoing groups.
TRANSPORTATION OFFICE (Top)
The Transportation Office is located in the Mastick Office and open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. The following services are available:
  • AC Transit Senior Monthly Stickers for $20

  • East Bay Paratransit Ticket Books (10 tickets) for $40

  • Alameda Premium Taxi Program for $2.50 each

TRANSPORTATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (Top)
The City of Alameda, through Measure B monies, offers limited matching funds through the Transportation Scholarship Program to assist individuals with Premium Taxi Service expenses.

To be eligible, you must be an Alameda residents, be certified Paratransit riders, and meet the very low-income requirements.

A limit of $50 in matching funds per family is available each fiscal year (July 1 through June 30), as funding is available. Proof of income is required. (e.g., SSA/SSI award letter, paycheck stubs, etc.) Income verification cannot be older than 60 days.
TRAVEL CORNER (Top)
Visit the Mastick Excursion Information Board located in the Mastick Office. There you will find information about monthly trips including registration forms, extended trips and travel, upcoming events (e.g., travel policies and procedures).

The Travel Office is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:30 am and 1:00 - 3:30 pm.
