AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM  (Top)

AARP Driver Safety Program is the largest classroom driver refresher course specifically designed for motorists who are 50 and older!

This eight-hour course is taught in two, four-hour sessions over a two-day period. Pre-registration is a must and can be completed in the Mastick office.  There is a $10 per person fee.  Please pay be checks (ONLY) made payable to AARP.

Ask your insurance agent about automobile insurance discounts.
  

AARP DRIVER ONLINE SAFETY COURSE  (Top)

AARP now offers the Driver Safety Course online. The cost is $15.95 for AARP members and $19.95 for non-members. the course may be completed at your own pace within 60 days of registration.

TRANSPORTATION SERVICES  (Top)

The Transportation Office is open on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and offers the following services.
  • AC Transit Senior Monthly Passes ($20.00), 10-Ride Pass ($8.50)

  • BART Discount Cards ~ 65 years or older and disabled ~ ($9.00)

PARATRANSIT SERVICES (Top)

The East Bay Paratransit Consortium provides transportation to individuals who are unable to use fixed-route public transportation, such as AC Transit buses or BART trains, because of a disability or disabling health condition. Rides are provided for people who are certified as eligible for Paratransit under the rules of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

511 TRANSPORTATION HOTLINE (Top)
511 is a toll-free phone and Web service that consolidates Bay Area transportation-related information into a one-stop resource. This easy three-digit number provides up-to-the-minute details on public transportation routes/fares, instant carpool or van pool referrals, bicycling information, trip-planning, airport access, City Car Share, Trans-Link, FasTrak and more.

To access 511 by phone, dial 511.  To access 511 on the Internet, go to www.511.org. Consider using the computers in Mastick's Computer Lab to access this resource.
    
PARATRANSIT SERVICES during the 21-day eligibility processing (Top)
Limited City of Alameda Measure B Funding is available to Alameda residents needing emergency transportation during the 21-day eligibility-processing period imposed by East Bay Paratransit.

The East Bay Paratransit Consortium provides transportation to individuals unable to use fixed-route public transportation, such as AC Transit buses and BART trains, because of a disability or disabling health condition.  If you feel that you may be eligible for East Bay Paratransit transportation services and need emergency transportation services due to a disabling health condition (e.g., dialysis, chemotherapy, radiation therapy) prior to completion of the 21-day eligibility processing period, contact Mastick Senior Center at 747-7506.
     
MEDICAL RETURN TRIP IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM - MRTIP (Top)
MRTIP is designed to provide a more flexible method for returning home
after/from medical appointments.  The City of Alameda has contracted with
Friendly Transportation to provide transportation services after/from medical
appointments.

Complimentary vouchers are provided to certified Alameda East Bay Paratransit participants. This program is made available through City of Alameda Measure B funding. For more information, contact the Mastick Office at 747-7506.
 
    
CITY OF ALAMEDA PARATRANSIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (Top)
The City of Alameda Paratransit Scholarship Program, sponsored by City of Alameda Measure B monies, is available to assist individuals with transportation
expenses.  A limit of $60 in matching funds per family is available each fiscal year, as funding is available. 

Eligible candidates must be Alameda residents, certified Paratransit riders, and meet the very low income requirements.  Applications are available in the Mastick Office.
       
EMERGENCY WHEELCHAIR TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM (Top)

Alameda County offers an emergency transportation service for individuals using wheelchairs who experience a wheelchair breakdown, or other kind of emergency requiring transport of the individual or a wheelchair.

AMERICAN RED CROSS  (Top)

The Alameda Service Center is an entry point for any Alamedan needing basic services, eviction prevention, or other emergency assistance. In addition, the Red Cross provides assistance with Alameda Power & Telecom bills, rent assistance, and case management services to those in danger of becoming homeless.

Health & Safety Classes and free Disaster Preparedness Training is also provided. The center is located at 451 Stardust Place, Bldg. #613, Alameda Point, Alameda. For more information contact Jim Franz at (510) 814-4200.
     

ALAMEDA COUNTY NETWORK OF CARE (Top)
The Alameda County Network of Care is a comprehensive, Internet-based resource for seniors and people with disabilities, as well as their caregivers and service providers.

The web site offers information on social service programs, including transportation, and can be accessed online at alameda.networkofcare.org.
    
FEDERAL & STATE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS FOR OLDER AMERICANS  (Top)
The National Council on the Aging has created a web site to assist those who wish to have information regarding available programs. Program information includes housing, employment, prescription drug costs, and utility bills.

The web site, www.benefitscheckup.org, lists more that 1,000 programs.
    

MEAL SERVICE (Top)

Bay Area Community Services (BACS) prepares the noon meal served Monday through Friday at Mastick Senior Center. Individuals 60 plus, who wish to participate, are requested to contribute $2.25 per meal. Members, guests or companions under age 60 who wish to participate are required to contribute $4.25 per meal.

Reservations are made a week in advance. To reserve lunch for the following week, please come by the Lobby desk or call (510)747-7500 by Friday before 11:30 am.

BROWN BAG PROGRAM (Top)

Mercy Care Center's Brown Bag Program collects and distributes donated food to 1,500 low-income seniors twice a month at 12 sites in Alameda County. Mastick is the designated site for the city of Alameda.

Eligible candidates must be 60 or older, with a gross monthly income of $1,169 for a single person and $2,192 for families of two or greater. Membership must be renewed annually. An annual voluntary contribution of $10 is appreciated at registration.

Brown Bag distributions are on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month between
9:00 - 10:00 am in Mastick's Dining Room 1. Members must have transportation and
be present to pick up their bag of groceries.

All applicants must provide identification and proof of income at the time of registration.

ALAMEDA FOOD BANK (Top)

The Alameda Food Bank is a private non-profit organization, providing nutritious food at no cost to low-income residents of the City of Alameda. Clients are able to receive up to seven free food packages each month, which include a healthy mix of produce, meat, breads, and non-perishable food items.

ALAMEDA MEALS ON WHEELS - AMOW  (Top)

AMOW delivers hot, diet specific meals to seniors and homebound Alameda residents seven days per week. Meals are sold at cost and delivered by volunteers. Sliding scale fees ensure that services are accessible to all.

DISASTER REGISTRY PROGRAM  (Top)

The Disaster Registry Program is available to Alameda residents with special needs that wish to be contacted after an earthquake or other major disaster. The City of Alameda Fire Department or Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) volunteers will contact residents after a major disaster to determine whether medical attention or other assistance is required.

ALAMEDA FRIENDLY VISITORS - AFV (Top)

AFV, a companion program to Alameda Meals on Wheels (AMOW), provides
companionship to seniors and homebound Alameda residents.  

AFV volunteers are matched with homebound neighbors to provide friendship, conversation over a cup of coffee or tea, exchange stories, share common interests/hobbies, have a few laughs, offer telephone reassurance, connect Alamedans with needed community resources, while bringing joy and satisfaction to both parties.

IN HOME SUPPORT SERVICES - IHSS (Top)

IHSS assists eligible aged, blind, and disabled individuals of all ages, to remain safely in their own homes with independence and dignity. Home care workers assist with cooking, housecleaning and shopping. They also assist with personal care (e.g., bathing. dressing, etc.).

HEALTH INSURANCE ASSISTANCE (Top)

The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) is a volunteer supported program that helps Medicare beneficiaries of any age make informed choices and provides advocacy when their health benefits are threatened or denied.

HICAP counselors provide individual counseling to Medicare beneficiaries regarding Medicare billings and claims problems, Medicare supplemental insurance, prescription drugs, Medicare HMOs and other managed care options, long-term care insurance, appeals, and more.

MEDICAL SERVICES/BLOOD PRESSURE (Top)

The Fire Department provides Blood Pressure Screening on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month between 10:00 am - 12:00 noon in Mastick's Music Room.

To obtain an accurate reading, refrain from exercise, caffeine, and nicotine 1½ hours prior to testing.
    

SOCIAL SECURITY (Top)

For Social Security questions call 1-800-772-1213 or go to the Oakland office (1111 Jackson St.) or the San Leandro office (320 Davis St.).

ALTA BATES TELE-CARE PROGRAM (Top)

The Alta Bates Tele-Care Program offers a daily reassurance telephone call provided by a friendly volunteer to those individuals who are living alone, homebound, disabled or convalescing from an illness. This free program is a source of comfort 365 days per year.

ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES - APS (Top)

Alameda County Social Services Agency (APS) "investigates and evaluates complaints of abuse or neglect."

If you, or someone you know, are experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, please call Adult Protective Services (510) 577-1900 or 577-3500. Calls are received by a confidential voice mail system. Please leave your name, phone number and the nature of your call.  An intake worker will return your call.
    

SEEDS COMMUNITY RESOLUTION CENTER - SEEDS CRC (Top)

SEEDS Community Resolution Center (SEEDS CRC) has trained volunteers, from East Bay communities representing a variety of ages, ethnic groups, religions, sexual orientation, occupations, life experiences, with the ability to speak several languages, available to provide mediation services to assist with conflict resolution.

CALIFORNIA ADVOCATES FOR NURSING HOME REFORM - CANHR (Top)

CANHR is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of care
& life for nursing home as well as residential care residents in California.

SENIOR CENTER WITHOUT WALLS (Top)

Senior Center Without Walls offers group activities, friendly conversation & an
assortment of classes to homebound elders.  Individuals can participate from the
comfort of their own home through telephone conference calls.

This program is free & available to seniors of Alameda County!

Senior Center Without Walls is sponsored by Senior Resources at St. Paul's
Episcopal Church in Oakland & the Episcopal Homes Foundation.   It is funded by grants & private donations.

FOUR BRIDGES (Top)

Four Bridges, sponsored by Bay Area Community Services (BACS), is a socialization program for adults with social and emotional problems. The program is offered Monday and Friday from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at First Congregational Church, 1912 Central Avenue.

LEGAL SERVICES (Top)

There are three services available:
  • The Alameda Main Library, 1550 Oak Street, sponsors "Lawyers in the Library" on the 1st Wednesday of the month between 6:00 - 8:00 pm.  Registration begins at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call (510) 747-7777.
       
  • Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) provides legal assistance to seniors 60 and older on the third Monday of the month between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm. For an appointment call (510) 747-7506. LAS can be reached at (510) 832-3040.
       
  • Legal Assistance Hotline for seniors 60 and older is 1-800-222-1753.
       

PROPERTY TAX POSTPONEMENT (Top)

The State Controller's Office administers the Property Tax Postponement Program
which enables homeowners to postpone payment of their property taxes.

To qualify, a homeowner must:

  • be at least 62 years of age, blind or disabled
  • possess 20% equity in the property which they own & occupy as the principal place of residence
  • have a total household income of $ 35,500

    The postponed property tax must be repaid when the homeowner moves, the
    home is sold, the homeowner dies, title passes to an ineligible person, or
    senior liens become delinquent.

NOTARY SERVICES (Top)

Warren Brunetti, volunteer Notary, is available on Wednesdays between 1:30 - 3:15 pm by appointment.

HOUSING REHABILITATION PROGRAMS (Top)

The City of Alameda sponsors several rehabilitation programs providing loans, grants, and/or technical assistance to homeowners.  Assistance is available to develop or conserve housing stock for low and moderate-income residents (less than $53,000 per two-person household), correct code deficiencies, or perform minor emergency home repairs.

The city has a new grant program exclusively for accessibility modifications that can assist by adding ramps and lifts, as well as making limited interior accessibility adaptions (e.g., installation of grab bars, etc.).

The substantial rehab program creates new affordable rental units in existing vacant or underutilized structures. Income limits do not apply to the property owner/developer in this program.

ELECTRIC BILL ASSISTANCE (Top)

The Red Cross administers two programs to assist low-income Alameda households with electric bills.  

  • EASE, the Energy Assistance Program, assists low-income Alamedans with current or overdue Alameda Power & Telecom (AP&T) electricity bills, by having an AP&T representative perform an energy audit.

    Qualifying households may receive free energy-efficient light bulbs and other energy conservation assistance.

  • The REACH program, administered by the Salvation Army through the Red Cross, helps low income Alameda residents with PG&E gas bills.
      

RENT REVIEW ADVISORY COMMITTEE - RRAC (Top)

RRAC reviews complaints of significant rental increases and provides a neutral forum for renters and residential property owners to present their views. It evaluates increases, determines whether they are equitable, and if not, attempts to mediate a resolution acceptable to all parties.

The committee has successfully mediated more than 225 rental increase cases. A tenant, who receives notice of a substantial rent increase, can obtain a Rental Increase Complaint (RIC) Form by calling the Development Services Department at (510) 749-5800, or visiting the Alameda Housing web site by clicking here.
    

HOMEOWNER AND RENTER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (Top)

California residents who are U.S. citizens & designated aliens, 62 years of age or
older, blind, or disabled, with a total household income of $44,096 or less
are eligible for the State of California's Homeowner and Renter Assistance Program.

Renters must pay monthly rent of $50 or greater.  Persons residing in tax-exempt properties are not eligible.  

The filing period begins July 1.  Applications are often available in the Mastick office. Volunteers will be available by appointment to assist with application completion. For more information, please call the Mastick Office at (510) 747-7506.
    

MEDI-CAL ASSISTANCE (Top)

The Medi-Cal Center is located at 8477 Enterprise Way, Oakland, CA 94612.
Questions pertaining to Medi-Cal eligibility should be directed to (800) 698-1118.
    

PODIATRY / BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING (Top)

Dr. Dale Wright, DPM does Podiatry and Blood Pressure Screening on the 3rd Tuesday of the month between 1:45 - 3:00 pm in the center's Music Room.
    

AAI HEALTH SERVICES (Top)

AAI Health Services provides primary health care services on a sliding scale, serves Medi-Cal recipients, along with the uninsured.  

AAI Health Services is located at 1002 Central Avenue in Alameda, CA 94501, and their phone number is (510) 521-6078.
    

TRAVEL CORNER (Top)

Visit the Mastick Excursion Information Board located in the Mastick Office. There you will find information about monthly trips including registration forms, extended trips and travel, upcoming events (e.g., travel policies and procedures).

The Travel Office is open on Tuesdays & Thursdays between 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.

1:00 - 3:30 p.m.
    

RED CROSS DISASTER KITS (Top)

Red Cross Disaster Kits can be ordered in the Mastick Office. Fliers outlining kit options are also available in the office.

Mastick members are eligible for a 20% discount on the variety of kits available. Checks should be made payable to the Alameda Red Cross.
    

SENIOR EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES PRPGRAM - ASSETS (Top)

Are you 55 or older, low income and in need of employment?  ASSETS Senior Employment Opportunities Program can assist with your employment needs (e.g., training, etc.).

HOUSEHOLD BATTERY DISPOSAL (Top)

Household batteries (e.g., AAA, AA, C, D or 9-volt) can no longer be deposited in your gray solid waste (garbage) cart. Mastick Senior Center now accepts household batteries.

Deposit batteries in the Battery Recycling Cart located in the Mastick Office on
Monday through Friday between 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.

Alameda County Industries (ACI) gladly accepts household batteries at their office
on 2307 Blanding Avenue, Suite B, weekdays between 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
       

INCOME TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE (Top)

During February through April 15, AARP Tax Assistance Program volunteers are
available to provide free tax preparation services to low and middle income individuals
with special attention to those 60 and older.

Limited appointments are available for low-income non-seniors.

This program is sponsored by AARP, IRS and Mastick Senior Center.
         

BIRTHDAY LUNCH CELEBRATION (Top)

Mastick Senior Center members are invited to celebrate their birthday at the monthly
Birthday Celebration event. The celebration includes a free lunch, a slice of birthday
cake and a balloon!

BICYCLE LICENSE SCHEDULE (Top)

The City of Alameda requires that all bicycles traveling city streets be licensed. To obtain a bicycle license, visit your neighborhood fire station, Monday through Friday,between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm or Saturday between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm.

The fee is $5 per bicycle.

Note that Mastick Senior Center now has two bicycle racks:

  • Courtyard near Lobby
  • Rear entrance of Mastick Social Hall
                     

ROAD TO RECOVERY (Top)

Road to Recovery is a program offered by the American Cancer Society to provide free transportation to individuals with cancer-related medical appointments. Volunteer drivers bring ambulatory individuals with cancer who are unable to drive themselves, to and from medical treatment facilities, providing a friendly, supportive, and reliable presence.

CITY OF ALAMEDA PREMIUM TAXI SERVICE  (Top)

Premium Taxi Service provides a 50% discount for taxi rides with the City of Alameda's transportation provider. The service is not limited to medical trips.

Eligible riders must purchase the required discount coupons in advance. However, to make the program fair to all users, you may purchase a maximum number of 5 coupons per quarter (every 3 months).

Eligibility Requirements:
Must be East Bay Paratransit-certified, 75 years of age or older, or 70 years of age or older without a driver’s license.

Cost:
Each travel coupon has a $5 value and costs $2.50. If the cost of a trip cannot be covered exactly with one or more $5 coupons, you may either give the driver an additional coupon or cash to pay the additional cost. However, if you use a coupon, drivers cannot provide you with change. You must present travel coupons with a completed Travel Information Form to the taxi driver upon arrival at your requested destination.
